What to Expect from an In-Home Dermatology Visit

A Dermatology House Calls provider arrives at a senior patient’s front door for an in-home visit

If you’ve never had a provider come to your home, you may wonder what the visit is actually like. The short answer: it’s a lot like a clinic appointment, minus the waiting room and the drive. Here’s what a typical in-home dermatology visit involves.

Before the visit

When you call or request an appointment online, our team confirms your insurance and schedules a time that works for you. We’ll ask a few questions about your skin concerns and your health history so your provider arrives prepared. There’s no trip fee to come to you.

When your provider arrives

One of our licensed providers comes to your home, or to your senior-living community, with the tools needed for a thorough exam. They’ll wash their hands, set up a clean space, and take a few minutes to talk with you about anything you’ve noticed such as a spot that’s changed, an itch that won’t quit, a rash, or simply a routine check.

The skin exam

With your permission, your provider performs a full-body skin exam or focuses on specific areas, depending on your needs. Good lighting and a careful, unhurried look are the heart of the visit. If something needs a closer look, your provider may recommend a small biopsy.

After the exam

You’ll get a clear explanation of what was found and a treatment plan for any next steps whether that’s a prescription, a follow-up, a procedure, a referral, or simply reassurance. Results and follow-up are coordinated through our secure patient portal or by phone, and your provider can answer questions before they leave.

Who comes to your door

Your care is provided by licensed nurse practitioners working under the supervision of a South Carolina-licensed physician, so you get dermatology-focused attention in the comfort of home.
